Encaustic

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves adding colored pigments to a heated wax medium. I like to think of it as “molten paint.” After the wax is applied to a rigid surface, it is fixed with heat by either a blow torch or a hot air gun.

I find the encaustic process to be extremely conducive to experimentation and play. There are many ways to apply the hot wax—by brushing, scraping or pouring it, for example—and there are even more ways to enhance the process by incorporating mixed media.
